DuoTyping doesn’t work in an app or on a site

Mac Windows Chrome and Edge Web

First, select some text and check it: with the shortcut on a Mac or Windows, or right-click in Chrome or Edge. That works in more places than marks as you type.

No marks in an app

On a Mac or Windows, try these in order:

  1. On a Mac, check that Accessibility is on.
  2. In the menu bar or tray, make sure Marks as you type is ticked and not paused.
  3. If you turned the app off, choose Turn On beside it in Settings › Apps.

Marks never run in password fields, password managers, code editors, terminals, banking apps or browsers. In a browser, the extension marks instead. On Windows, Word and classic Outlook take the shortcut only, and DuoTyping can’t paste into an app run as administrator.

Some text boxes don’t let DuoTyping read them. There the badge doesn’t show, but the shortcut still works.

The shortcut does nothing

Another app may hold the keys. Record new ones in Settings › Shortcuts, or choose Check Selection in the menu bar or tray.

No bar or marks on a website

In Chrome or Edge, click DuoTyping in the browser’s toolbar. It says why:

  • Turned off or paused on this site: choose Turn On.
  • “This page isn’t secure”: plain http pages get right-click only.
  • Code editors, terminals and sites ending in .bank are left out, and so are private windows and Google Docs.

Some sites ask writing tools to stay out of a text box. There, right-click still works.

A paragraph isn’t marked

It may be in a language off your list: choose Check Now, or add the language. A paragraph over 2,000 characters isn’t marked as you type. Select it and check it instead.

Still stuck?

On a Mac or Windows, choose Report a Problem… in the badge’s menu. It sends the app and how marks work there, never your text. Or tell us below.

Didn’t find it? Tell us, and we’ll see which page.
